Pedro Menéndez de Avilés (February 15, 1519 - September 17, 1574) and his men in 1566 visited and claimed the area around Miami for Spain.
Pedro Menéndez de Avilés was born in Avilés, in Asturias, Spain he was a Spanish admiral at the age of forty six and pirate hunter.
He founded the city of St. Augustine in Florida (the first permanent European settlement) on August 28 1565.
He was the first governor of Florida.
And he also had a huge family fortune.
